I'm a big fan of Hellboy and so to work on the film, well, that was a no-brainer. This was the first feature film I'd ever worked on. By the time I arrived at Tippett most of the character/creature work was already completed. But I did have a chance to work on some fun stuff, including a couple trailor shots. For the above shots, I worked on the main tentacle arm for the Behemouth creature. I even created controls for its suction cups to contract along the arm. You're going to have to take my word for it as you never see any of it in the film....not even if you slo-mo it:). The arm had to have the ability to be cut in half by Hellboy's sword, so I had to create the anatomy on its insides. When I asked if there was any concept work done for this, they said they didn't have any. Blair Clark, the VFX Sup, asked me if I'd like to create it. "Uh, yeah!". So there's my claim to fame on the movie Hellboy. I got to design what the inside of the Behemouth's arm looked like. And in the last shot above, you can really see it. Score!
The last bits of creature work that I did for Hellboy was doing tweaks work for the Sammael creature's tentacles, Baby Hellboy's pupil shapes and Abe Sapien's pupil shapes and nictating eye membranes.
